Ecoyarns started from my passion for Ecologically friendly knitting yarns and spinning fiber. I knit and spin and have been constantly frustrated by the lack of Eco friendly products on the market.
How more organic can you make wool and cotton?Actually, a whole lot MORE! Sheep are covered in chemicals yearly to keep pests and insects off them, they are exposed to injections, antibiotics and other chemicals that are found in their feed and sprayed on the grass. Organic wool ensures that there are no chemicals found on the farm and only detergents to wash the wool during processing. No dyes are used, the colours are completely natural.
Now Cotton, you say, surely that is eco friendly. It is a natural fiber and is grown from the plants, not made from petrochemicals? Actually, cotton is extremely toxic. "Conventional" cotton growing uses 25% of all the insecticides used globally. Large amounts of pesticides, insecticides, fertilizers are used, that run-off into groundwater and drinking water supplies. Not to mention the fumigation, bleaching and toxic dyes that are used to produce a single cotton T-shirt. Please see Sustainable Cotton
"If cotton were a crop that we ate instead of one that we wore, the E.P.A. and F.D.A. wouldn't allow us to spray it with some of the things we use." Jerry Williams - Philips County Arkansas Extension Service, The New Yorker July 8, 1991.

Our yarn company is based on ecologically sound practices. We recycle whenever possible. Brochures, cards and general printing are done on 100% recycled paper and use vegetable-based inks wherever possible. We try to use biodegradable packaging whenever possible and will be using Organic Cotton shopping bags for our larger kits. We contribute regularly to Greenpeace and to Medicins Sans Frontieres.
